Moscow has a wonderfully unique Metro system, each station with its own Soviet-era personality, and each so far below the ground that the escalator ride to the platform takes a few minutes.
Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square) station is famous for its bronze sculptures, one of which is a frontier guard with a dog, whose nose is believed to bring good luck if you rub it. I rubbed its nose, as did my friend, who less than 24 hours later found herself in an incredibly frightening life-threatening situation, from which she emerged shaken but unharmed. When we spoke about her fortune, she said to me, "Yesterday, we rubbed the dog's nose."
