How clean is Beijing?

I've heard plenty about how much Beijing changed in the months leading up to the 2008 Olympics: tenements razed, et cetera. Even today, the Beijing most tourists see, and the Beijing even more Chinese call home, can be quite different. If you visit a subway near the city center, e.g. Tiananmen East or West, you'll see clean corridors and orderly life, insofar as that many people can remain orderly. But on the subway's outskirts, e.g. Sanyuanqiao Station (三元桥站), you're more likely to see wear and neglect, which may be a truer picture of Beijing on the whole.
