Irrigation canals on Jeju-do (Jeju Island)

There is no natural surface water on Jeju Island, which without further effort makes farming basically impossible. More than 100 years ago, Jeju citizens undertook an effort that took years: They dug irrigation canals by hand so that farming rice and other foods would be possible.

A local woman takes a break from gardening made possible by Jeju's irrigation canals.

The same irrigation canal. The 'Danger' sign is because of the waterfall, not the canal.

Apparently this canal was the most difficult stretch of all those constructed on the island.
