San Ignacio, Belize

San Ignacio in the Cayo district of Belize, near the Guatemalan border in the north, has ruins that are far less popular than the ones you'll find just across the border. From town, you can walk to Cahal Pech, where there is a museum (along with the Cahal Pech ruins) that succinctly and effectively tells the story of the region's importance in Mayan history. Also, only a short bus ride away is Xunantunich, which I loved. I got a private tour from one of the excavators.
