Buying food in Guatemala

Buying food in Guatemala, or at least in San Pedro La Laguna at Lake Atitlán, was more than just visiting local markets. It was peering into doorways, hallways, front gates, wherever whatever, and asking local families if you could buy some of what they were making. Food intended for sale, it seemed, although certainly not a market but instead just somebody's home.

Food is purchased by the quetzal. I'll take one quetzal ($0.13) of beans, or one quetzal of tortillas (five tortillas).

We bought beans here. Notice the rebar. Rebar everywhere in Guatemala.
